Visqueen Gas Barrier receives updated BBA Certification

We are pleased to announce that they have received their renewed BBA Certification for the Visqueen Gas Barriers.

Visqueen Building Products Gas Barrier has achieved re certification due to it being retested in line with the new requirements to BS8485:2015. The Visqueen Gas Barriers meet the standards outlined in the BS8485:2015 document and has also passed BS ISO 15105-1, which is the methane permeability testing that these products must pass.

The Certificate relates to Visqueen Gas Barrier, a gas barrier and damp-proof membrane, for use in concrete ground floors above and below slabs not subject to hydrostatic pressure, to protect the building against moisture, radon, methane and carbon dioxide from the ground.

The key factors of the Gas Barriers which were assessed are, the resistance to water vapour, resistance to underground gases, resistance to puncture and the overall durability of the Gas Barrier. Continue reading

Visqueen Gas Venting system ensures compliance to BS8485:2015

Visqueen has developed a comprehensive passive venting solution to facilitate the dilution and dispersal of dangerous gases. Used extensively across the UK.

Visqueen offers a variety of solutions to disperse gas safely from beneath buildings. The type of passive venting system required is dependent on the building type and the amount of gas flow.

Current UK construction practice adopts the concept of multiple gas protection measures to form a gas control system. Typically, protection measures increase in number and robustness as the potential risk increases.

The gas protection solution is based on a point scoring system in accordance with BS8485:2015. Continue reading

Visqueen offer a comprehensive range of high performance Damp Proof Membranes

Visqueen offer a comprehensive range of high performance Damp Proof Membranes (DPM) for incorporation into floor constructions to prevent the ingress of damp into buildings.

Visqueen High Performance DPM – BBA Approved – is Visqueen’s premium grade Damp Proof Membrane manufactured from prime virgin polymers for use as a Type “A” damp proof membrane as defined by BS EN 13967: 2012.

The DPM is yellow in colour and available centre folded in 4m x 12.5m x 500um roll format.

The 500μm membrane is manufactured as a centre folded product to limit creases which aids jointing and welding applications on site. Centre Folded films can also help to reduce cracks found in structural concrete screeds where traditional multi-folded DPMs are used. Continue reading

Recognising change to ensure BS 8485 compliance

In June 2015, BSI, the Business Standards Company, revised (and renamed) BS 8485Code of practice for the design of protective measures for methane and carbon dioxide ground gases for new buildings”.

Visqueen - Compliane BS8485

The standard is a key piece of guidance for design consultants to give recommendation and describe methods for the investigation of ground gases like methane and carbon dioxide during development of affected sites, and regulators (environmental health officers and building control) who need to assess/approve foundation designs.

The original document; BS8485:2007 was brought up-to-date in the new version: BS8485:2015. The thinking behind this was that the original standard didn’t go far enough in regards to the specification of the gas membrane itself and the British Standards Institute wanted to enforce more stringent permeability levels, especially where methane gas is concerned. This is in order to increase resistance to methane gas permeation through the membrane.

Key changes to BS 8485:

  • Clearer guidance on the interpretation of gas monitoring data and assignment of gas screening values
  • Reference Technical Note RB17 characteristic situations classification using TOC (toxic organic compounds)
  • Review and expanded guidance on protection measures scoring (old Table 3)
  • Include reporting requirements of gas protecting measures
  • Added informative guidance in annexes on radon and volatile organic compounds (VOC’s)
  • More detailed guidance on interpretation of gas monitoring data
  • Recommendations on membrane selection and verification

Phil BullPhil Bull, Commercial Director at Visqueen Building Products said:

“It is vitally important that the industry recognises that BS8485: 2007 has gone and is no longer valid unless the contractor using the products had a planning condition in place prior to June 2015. Here at Visqueen we are adapting our existing gas barriers and membranes to ensure full compliancy required by BS8485:2015. It should be a priority for every relevant manufacturer to start the process of adhering to the latest version of the standard.” Continue reading
