Visqueen Radon Membrane is manufactured from an enhanced blend of polymer films that is suitable for use in the protection of buildings from the ingress of radon gas. In this video, we demonstrate how to seal a Radon membrane when a drainage pipe intersects the membrane.
The tools of the trade required for this are a sharp knife or pair of scissors, a roller with a neoprene wheel and a screw driver. To complete the job, you will need Visqueen Radon Membrane, Visqueen Gas Resistance Lap Tape, a Visqueen Top Hat unit and a jubilee clip.
Firstly, unroll the Radon membrane across the blinded surface. When you reach the drainage pipe, you will need to cut the membrane to fit the pipe.
The membrane will then slot over the drainage pipe and lie flat. Take the top hat unit and place over the drainage pipe. The base of the top hat unit should lie flat against the Radon membrane.
You will now need to seal the base of the top hat to the radon membrane using the gas resistant lap tape.
The lap tape should be placed equidistant over the radon barrier and the top hat base. Take the roller and press it down over the tape to ensure that it is fully bonded to the top hat unit and radon membrane. Repeat the process for the remaining 3 sides of the top hat unit. You will then have a completed unit. You will now need to seal the neck of the top hat to the drainage pipe, again using the lap tape.
For ease of installation, cut the lap tape to the required length. For a standard 110mm plastic drainage pipe, you will need a 480mm length of lap tape which allows for a 100mm overlap.
The lap tape should be positioned equidistant over the neck of the top hat, on to the drainage pipe and taken around the perimeter of the two.
Then, take the jubilee clip and place it over the top of the top hat and drainage pipe and tighten using a screw driver until it fits snugly around the top hat unit.
The top hat installation is now complete:
Visqueen Radon Membrane acts as a damp proof membrane, but is not intended for use where there is the risk of hydrostatic pressure. It is approved for use in Ireland. Our Radon Membrane can be used in most common floor constructions.
It is installed in a similar way to a damp proof membrane, but with much greater attention paid to workmanship and detailing in order to achieve effective sealing at all locations.
Please note we recommend the use of Visqueen LPGM Gas Membrane 500um for commercial applications.
- Independently tested for radon resistance.
- BBA Certified.
- High resistance to puncture.
- Also acts as a damp proof membrane.
- Complies with BR 211: 2007
